How to select the Nursing Pads or Breast Pads?

There are two types of Nursing Pads broadly available in the market.

A) Disposable Nursing Pads

B) Reusable and Washable Nursing Pads

Disposable nursing pads are comparatively thin and comes with the absorbent material. They also do have adhesive strips to stick to the cloth. Their shape is square or elongated

Reusable nursing pads are made up of cotton and inner absorbent microfiber layers absorbs the leaked milk. Most of these are perfectly round and contoured for the better fitting. They can snugly fit with the breast and avoids any bunch up in the bra. This is important.

Disposable pads comes in the quantity of 50-200 whereas reusable pads are available in the quantity of 4-10. Usually 4-6 are enough. Disposable pads are pretty expensive in the longer run. Moreover absorbent chemicals may not be suitable sometimes.

How to use Nursing Pads?

Though simple, it is very important to understand how to use the nursing pads.

  1. Take one available with you and remove any packaging if it is there.
  2. Open the pad completely and put it over breast covering the entire nipple. 
  3. For disposable breast pads ensure that the soft absorbent portion is inside covering the breast.
  4. Push it inside the bra such that it does not bunch up. 
  5. Check that your free movements of the hand does not cause the pad to move. If so, fit it once again till it snugly fits over breast.

To summarize follow these four guidelines

1. Coverage:  The pad you select is big enough to give the good coverage to your breast

2. Comfortable: It is comfortable for usage and does not adds up to your problem in terms of fitting and bunch ups

3. Contoured: Contoured pads do have the best fittment and coverage

4. Absrobent: The nursing pad is good enough to absorb the milk leakages over the prolonged period so that you need not change it very frequently
